Tallulah-Palooza Friday

Thanksgiving edition! Tallulah Mae went over the river and through the desert to Grandmother's house...she jumped out of the car and RAN up to to the cute!

She also got to enjoy a steady stream of turkey juice, unbeknownst to everyone, which was slowly leaking out of the aluminum roasting pan. When we discovered it, her entire head was covered with it and she was happily lapping it up when it hit the floor. Score!

Happy Thanksgiving 2014!

Tallulah Mae and I wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving. I am very grateful for my life--it's full of love from all quarters. I wish the same for you!

Woo hoo! Scored more than a hundred pieces of melmac at a garage sale down the street...all colors, all shapes, all brands (including some nice Russel Wright pieces).

We use melmac dishes every day, so we swapped out some of our dishes for some of these beauties. Most of the rest are destined for my Etsy shop, so if you're into plastica, stay tuned!

Birdbath or Cat Drinking Fountain?

Our new next-door neighbors' cat making use of our fountain. It's fine, I guess, but if I find any dead animals in my yard she will be feline non grata...She's quite pretty, isn't she? Sweet, too...

Where's Waldina?

Can you spot the lovely visitor to my tree? I believe she's a female lesser goldfinch.

Mobile Books

A bookmobile! I haven't seen one in ages...I love that books come to you, and I hope there will always be bookmobiles...

Etsy Messy

This is what my house looks like much of the time right now: the big big push to photograph and list things in my Etsy shop is in full swing!

Strike a Pose

I love my lizard pretty (and hopefully eating tons of insects in the garden). They startle me--I step outside and they (he? she?) streak away across the pavement.

Fall Falling (Fa la la la la?)

Finally, on the 17th of November, there is a chill in the air--chilly enough for me to put on socks and a sweater around the house (this is how we measure weather here!).

Ch-ch-ch Chia...Pudding

OK, so it doesn't LOOK all that appetizing, but it's rather tasty: chia "pudding" (no cook) made with almond milk and maple syrup. Chia seeds (the ones I have are black, hence the lovely grey color!) are super high in protein and fiber. And yes, I believe they are THOSE chia seeds. The texture is rather like tapioca.

We have a hard time with breakfast...boring, not all that great for you, etc., etc., so I was nosing around the interwebs and found this. It's filling, eaten with some fruit...until it's not: about 3 hours after eating it, you are all of a sudden HUNGRY. Variety, spice, life.

It's a Girl!

My third (and final, for now) caterpillar has gone through metamorphosis and is now a lovely monarch butterfly flying free.

Look how fat it was! (And look how fat my finger looks!)
Here it has gone into the "J" shape before it begins to go into the chrysalis...
Although this is blurry, you can see the skin splitting open (then it falls off, ewww!).
Twelve days later--a bit longer than the others--the chrysalis begins to change, first becoming opaque, then black, and then transparent.
And despite my getting up very early this morning in hopes of seeing it emerge, I woke up to find this:

In this photo you can see her proboscis curled up; it is in two parts when they emerge and they roll the two pieces in and out and somehow (how?!) it becomes one tube.
Look how crazy long her filaments ("antennae") are!

Amazing to see the tiny bits that make up the wings...

You can tell it's a female because she is lacking the two dark spots on her wings that identify a male (my other two were both male).

I had to leave for an appointment, and when I returned, she was gone. Yay!

No more butterfly-sitting for me for a while. I've put the milkweed plant outside now...I hope some female--maybe the beauty above?--will come by and lay some more eggs. But not for a while...I'm exhausted! And very very happy that three of the four caterpillars survived and flew away.

Ur Foziewisp

Behold: a dandelions, one of the very first foziewisps that I took notice of. My mom tells me I used to call the seeds floating on the breeze "fairies." And just maybe they really are, in some sense...

Turn to the Right!

This photograph makes me laugh: it reminds me so much of the scene in Raising Arizona where Holly Hunter is taking Nicolas Cage's mug shot: "Turn to the riight!"
Is he in for stealing "hunny"?

(I made that collage in order to list him on Etsy--we're limited to 5 photos so I often make collages in order to show as much detail as possible.)

Tallulah-Palooza Friday

Outtakes from our Halloween photo session. I was trying to tie a bandanna on her head à la Rosie the Riveter, but Miss Mae was having none of it. By the end, she was lying on it so I couldn't try to put it on again. Silly--and smart!--girl...
