Scenes from a Weekend

'Twas a marvelous birthday weekend--Saturday spent at the movies watching the Best Picture nominees (I don't agree with the one that won, BTW); Sunday a matinee of Turandot and then a fun Oscars get-together with our friends. The winner of Oscar Bingo (B. won!) received the coveted Cumberbatch.

Cards, flowers, birthday cake, homemade brownies (not pictured), good friends, and precious loved ones--I am truly one lucky girl!

Prosit!

Ja! The German American Societies put on a rockin' Oktoberfest in El Cajon this past weekend...
According to my husband, who knows such things, it was pretty darn authentic (no busty lasses carrying multiple beer steins, but still...).
Lederhosen and dirndls!
Sauerkraut, Bratwurst, Kartoffelsalat, und Bier!
Pastries!
Guys in Tyrolean hats and funny whiskers!

And an authentic German band, all the way from...you guessed it, Germany. Fun!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Geisel

It's Dr. Seuss's birthday--if he were still with us, he would have been 107 years old today. As you might imagine, at the Geisel Library at UC San Diego, his birthday is celebrated with great gusto. There are balloons...
Musical performances...
Kids of all ages...
A cake featuring the Cat in the Hat's head...
...which was made of Rice Krispies treats so was sawed apart to feed the hungry masses of college students.
...who had already devoured about 20 of these sheet cakes.
I never read the Dr. Seuss books as a kid--I seemed to move on quickly from being read to by my mom to reading the Little House on the Prairie books (perhaps an exaggeration, but you know what mean; I skipped over that level of book)--but now I appreciate them as rather marvelous celebrations of language. Happy Birthday!
