Christmas Tumbleweeds

 

Today it was exceedingly windy, and as we were driving on the 5 Freeway, many large tumbleweeds were blowing across the road. We've lived in Southern California for 40 years and have NEVER seen tumbleweeds on the freeway. Freaky!

I do find it somehow poignant that plants/weeds will grow wherever they can...this is a hole in the middle of a street, which means cars are driving over it.

I think this might be a week--not in MY yard; I'm on those weeds before they know what hit them--but isn't it pretty? The incredibly delicate tracery of lines...just lovely. Remember to look down, up, and all around when you're out walking!

So pretty...
...for a weed. This is oxalis, which is grown on purpose by some folks as "shamrock," but here--at least in my yard--it's a weed. It's especially pesky because it reproduces by making lots of little corms that remain in the soil when you pull the weed. It really is quite sweet and pretty!

Ample proof that even weeds can be beautiful--just NOT in my yard (damn it!). BTW, this is not my yard...thank goodness, 'cause that's a LOT of weeds!
