The Signs of San Francisco

It's grey, cold, and rainy here, so I reached back into June in sunny San Francisco to highlight some of the marvelous vintage signs to be found there. I love a good sign!

San Fran: The Classics

We were in San Francisco a few weeks ago--B. won a prestigious award from the American Library Association, yay!--and this most picturesque of cities looked fabulous. Here are some classic places in San Francisco.
 Golden Gate bridge.
Transamerica Pyramid (which actually no longer has the office of Transamerica in it!), designed by William Pereira.

 The Fairmont Hotel.
 Coit Tower
 Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill
The Tonga Room! (It's inside the Fairmont.)
Spires of Sts. Peter and Paul Church (North Beach)
 Fisherman's Wharf
 Chinatown
 Of course.
 Lombard Street
And Alcatraz.

More San Francisco pix to come...

Ribbon Ribbon, Who's Got the Ribbon?

Ribbon heaven at Britex in San Francisco! I could just fondle it all day (but I didn't, because that would be weird!).

Magical Marvelous Musee Mechanique

This, my friends, is one of my favorite places EVER. It's the Musee Mecanique (warning: there is sound when you click on this link and on the link below), on Pier 45 in San Francisco. It's fantastic...it used to be in the basement of Cliff House, but when it was remodeled they moved to Fisherman's Wharf.
The sound you hear when you click on the Musee Mecanique website above is from this lady, Laughing Sal; she was (allegedly...controversy as to whether this is the one that was really there) at the entrance to Playland at the Beach, a beloved San Francisco amusement park, for years, until they tore it down.

This vending machine is their "gift shop"--love it! Ah, it makes me so happy that places like this still exist...
