Chicano Park

These amazing murals are painted underneath the 5 Freeway; the houses/streets that had been here were demolished in order to build it. This is now a National Historic Landmark.

El Indio

Love these small neon signs that I have never noticed before--even though I have driven by hundreds of times--on El Indio, a classic Mexican restaurant that has been in this spot since 1940.

Spreckels

I've resolved to try to document the cool signs in the city where I actually live...super fun to find them on road trips, but these are in as much danger of disappearing (possibly more) than those anywhere else. So: the Spreckels Theatre.

Parking in Rear

I love this sign: the angle, the fact that "parking" is as prominent as "liquor," and of course, the arrow!

I Heart Arrows

One arrow sign...

Another arrow sign...
Both arrow signs!

(I do love how Boulevard Liquor reallllly wants to make sure you know the name of the store!)

Starry Arrow-y

I do love me an arrow sign, so an arrow sign with a star on top? Yes, please!

Hotel

I loves me a motel/hotel sign, and I'd never seen this one before, right here in SD. A nice simple design that gets the job done... needs an arrow, though!

Different Light Show, Same Day

Last night we went with friends to Lightscape (holiday lights) at the San Diego Botanic Garden. It was pretty cool!

Tiny crescent moon to the right of the tree...

Fun Friday

Today I took myself downtown on the trolley to hear the San Diego Symphony in rehearsal at the Rady Shell. They played Beethoven's Seventh, the second movement of which is so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. An amazing free opportunity to hear classical music in a lovely setting.

Silver Screen

This lovely movie theatre is now...a Barnes and Noble bookstore. So glad it wasn't torn down...

Crustacean

We have been walking various SoCal beaches for 30-plus years, and this is the first time I have ever seen a lobster washed up...

Pointed

Gotta love these old signs...and yes, the Live Wire is a classic "beer joint."

Faux-Goyle

A San Diego gargoyle (a fake one [because it is not actually a water spout/drain], but still...).

Labor (Day) Reward

 B. and I "labored" today (he working on new gates/fencing, I doing yardwork), so we were extra happy to have our required ice cream (it's the law--well, our law) to have it on national holidays. We both had chocolate chip (so good--the vanilla ice cream is delicious and not just a boring vehicle for the chocolate chips). They currently can't put the ice cream in the cone and hand it to you, so this is what you get.
It is from our favorite ice cream purveyor, Niederfrank's, holding on since 1948.

Happy Labor Day!
