Day Trip to the Salton Sea: The Birds
The impetus for our day trip--above and beyond just the simple urge to leave San Diego County--was to go bird watching. The Salton Sea is part of the Pacific Flyway, where migratory birds stop for a rest. The Sonny Bono Wildlife Refuge sits along the bottom and lower east edge of the sea.
Last year we saw some Sandhill cranes; herons, egrets, geese, and LOTS of ducks and duck-like birds abound. It was quite windy on Sunday, and I think we were a few weeks too late for prime migratory action. We did see some, though...
