More

Remember these lovelies from this summer?

These are what I dug up (to store over the winter)...just one tuber, planted in the spring, has turned into these clumps of new tubers. Not all of them are viable, but very cool!

The clump above is amazing...

I also discovered some squirrelly items buried in the dahlia bed. I put these here on a stack of bricks that the skwerls use as stairs, and the next day they were all gone, buried somewhere else in the yard, I assume.

SKWERL Return

Our fountain was out of commission for a bit (slow leak), and while it was empty I watched a squirrel keep investigating to try to figure out why there was no water (which made me sad!).

Happily, it came back!

Happy SKWERL!!!! Day

Happy International Squirrel Day! I love these little scamps...so fun to watch. I always think about Tallulah Mae, who would literally scream and try to climb any tree to get to them; I had people stop and ask me more than once if my dog was OK. Yes, she was OK--insane about SKWERLS, but OK.

I adore this albino squirrel in Washington, DC. So cool!

Action!

 One SKWERL a-leapin' ...

(Oh, Tallulah Mae, thinking about you--she would have gone ballistic!)

OK, bye-bye!

SKWERL!!!!! Albino Edition

OMG. An albino SKWERL!!!!! (I wonder what Tallulah Mae would have thought...skwerls were her nemeses.)

This dude/dudette and a normal skwerl were chasing each other all around, up and down trees, right outside the Smithsonian Museum of American History. A.Maze.Ing!

SKWERL-nanigans

This dude/dudette was hanging upside down on thin branches to retrieve something (being eaten in the last photo)...SKWERL!

Squirrelio

SKWERLLLLLL!!!!! This dude/dudette was barking and chirping up a storm at Tallulah Mae and Stanley, neither of whom was too interested in it (thank goodness!).

Our Miss Mae is almost thirteen years old and she is going deaf, alas...I'm not sure she really heard the SKWERL.

SKWERL!!!!

He/she was eating the seeds out of a pod (see behind it?). A lovely tail, yes?

P.S.: Tallulah Mae was not with me, so everyone was spared the screeching and squealing that goes along with squirrl sightings.

Cirque des écureuils

Cue the circus music!

"Giddy-up," said Monsieur SKWERL. Mademoiselle Lapin is not amused, while M. Jardin Gnome is just chillin'.
Uh-oh, looks like Mlle. Lapin has just bucked M. SKWERL off onto the ground. He's all, "I meant to do that."

Meanwhile, the Great SKWERLenda (get it? "Skwerl" plus "Wallenda" = "SKWERLenda") is high above the ring.

TA DA!

{Clap clap clap clap}.

Bien fait, mes chers écureuils! Bravo!

(This little dude was really scratching himself up there and I was actually terrified that he was going to fall off--that is one HIGH telephone pole. All's well that ends well!)

Dramatic SKWERL!!!!!

This SKWERL didn't like the cut of Tallulah Mae's jib--it sat up there on the telephone pole and barked at us as we walked by.
This SKWERL was on my garage roof...
...and I swear, it turned and looked at me (I was inside, shooting through a window) and it was just like the Dramatic Chipmunk: dun dun DUN! [sound here, be warned]

Portrait of SKWERL!!!!!! in Tree

Squirrel silhouette (Tallulah didn't even notice it--she thought it was a tree knob. With ears.). He/she stayed perfectly still, right above our heads.

Things in Trees

 1. SKWERL!!!!!!! Right outside my bedroom window, no less. Cheeky little sod.
2. Hummingbird, trying to stay in the shade on a hot day.

SKWERL!!!!!!

 Um...
OK...

This skwerlio was perched on this trashcan for quite some time, just like this--and it was barking at the top of its lungs at Tallulah Mae and Stanley, who were at least 500 feet away. Weirdo skwerlio...

Earlier in the day, in my own neighborhood (that's a park above--you might have guessed that or wondered why we might have multiple concrete picnic tables in our backyard), I saw a squirrel leap from a telephone wire about 5 or 6 feet across to a tree...amazing. The better to raid the bird feeder...
