Obeying the Ice Cream Law
...with ice cream from a new place, Handel's (from Ohio, apparently, since 1945). Really yummy! (This is coffee chocolate chip and praline pecan--alas, no chocolate chip, my fave...)

Rule Followers
Monday was a national holiday, so of course we had to have ice cream (it's the law...well, our law, anyway). This was delicious spumoni gelato (gelato DOES count as ice cream!).

Desert Odds 'n' Sods + Pioneertown
Scenes from Sparrows Lodge, our very cute hotel.
Also from the hotel: a very cute idea--water trough--that doesn't work too well in practice (too much water needed to fill, and in this case, the drain would not stay stoppered).

Ooh, for the next road trip?
S'mores at the hotel! Cheers!Quintessential Palm Springs view here...the mountains are right there.
Yum!
Would make a cute little shop!
And then, Pioneertown. Built in 1946 by Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, and others, it was meant to be a filming and vacation location. The lake, golf course, airport, and shopping center did not happen (apparently in part due to the scarcity of water). More than 50 films and TV shows were filmed here.
Pappy and Harriet's is now a restaurant and music venue.

Labor (Day) Reward
B. and I "labored" today (he working on new gates/fencing, I doing yardwork), so we were extra happy to have our required ice cream (it's the law--well, our law) to have it on national holidays. We both had chocolate chip (so good--the vanilla ice cream is delicious and not just a boring vehicle for the chocolate chips). They currently can't put the ice cream in the cone and hand it to you, so this is what you get.
It is from our favorite ice cream purveyor, Niederfrank's, holding on since 1948.
Happy Labor Day!

Following the Rules
On federal holidays we eat ice cream--it's the rule! You must obey it...
Such a strange Fourth this year, with no neighborhood parade or fireworks by the shore. We had Tillamook ice cream sandwiches from the grocery since we were not sure what ice cream stores would be open on the holiday/in this weird world in which we currently live. They were yummy (if small, LOL). And maybe a random heart?

Science
I made Mason jar ice cream...a fun little experiment that tastes more like what it is (shaken and frozen whipped cream) than "real" ice cream. Still, kinda cool and seems like a worthwhile thing for kids to try.

Philly Phood
Philadelphia junk food: Tastykakes (made since 1914, kinda yum in a junky way) and Utz potato chips (since 1921, and, well, potato chips!).
The biggest "pig ear" baked good I have ever seen, at the Reading Terminal Market (quite an amazing place, in business since 1893).
Bassetts ice cream--delicious--made since 1861 (!).
Philbert, the mascot for the Reading Terminal Market.
