Nostalgia: Visual and Olfactory

A new box of crayons: is there anything more evocative of being six years old? It's not just how pretty they are, all lined up, like colorful little soldiers in bright and shiny caps--it's also that SMELL. Breathe deep, and you're back at the kitchen table, coloring away, not a care in the world.

Here's a partial list of other smells that instantly take me back to a happy place:

* Freshly mown grass
* The smell of rain on concrete
* Spray starch
* Chlorine on sun-warmed skin
* Coppertone suntan oil
* Permanent solution: viva la Toni perms!--corollary: Breck shampoo
* Pencil shavings
* Furniture polish
* Dentyne gum and perfume = my grandma's pocketbook
* Christmas trees

I left off food smells because there are too many to list...

Tell me yours in the comments, please!

Oh! Dolls, Play Dough, Silly Putty, Paste (no, I never ate it!), elementary school class rooms, Easter eggs (the hard candy ones with the marshmallow insides), Dr. Pepper, BB Bats, Mary Jane's, Big Hunks, Charms Pops (would last through a whole movie while making your tongue raw), Luden's cough drops, Juicy Fruit gum, Bubble Gum (Bazooka), beans (pinto) and cornbread, pancakes and syrup, biscuits, bacon!, yeast rolls and my all time favorite Gardenias. My mom grew them everywhere we lived. We buried her with one pinned to her dress.
Anyway, I agree with your list, especially the rain smell.
Thanks for the memories!!!!!!!
I may have to follow your lead and do a post about this too, HA!

My uncle's pipe tobacco, the scent of orange blossoms coming from the orchard, the jasmine growing outside the bathroom window, wild sage, mint growing next to the outdoor faucet, starch on cotton being ironed.

For me, I would add the smell of burning leaves in the fall and Double Bubble bubble gum. Chanel #5..mom's perfume.
The minute I saw the picture of the crayons I could smell them!!

I still love a new box of crayons. Still.
